Not everyone has a strong work ethic and a desire to make things happen, but William (Bill) Napier has been working hard his whole life – and it shows! Bill is an avid gardener, passionate family man, professional driver, and one of the greatest guys you’ll ever meet. Learn more about Bill…
Good Country Values
Bill was born and raised out in the country in Mansfield, Ohio. While he didn’t live on a farm, he had a pony that he loved to care for, and his family had a large garden where they grew their own food. Having things like a pony and a garden to tend to, Bill was never one of those kids who sat inside and watched tv. In fact, he spent a lot of his time learning how to can food with his mother.
“Sure, it’s much easier to just go to the store and buy food, but doing it yourself makes you feel like you’ve really accomplished something,” says Bill.
Canning has become somewhat of a family tradition… Bill’s mother taught his wife how to can, and now his wife and daughter often spend time canning together as well. This is great bonding time for the whole family, and the finished products are delicious!
Bill has loved working since he was in high school. In fact, he worked at a dairy farm in high school and actually went and milked cows before school. Now that’s a great work ethic! Bill also drove a truck to help a friend out, making pickups and deliveries at a limestone quarry. He never thought about trucking as a career when he was younger, but it was a natural choice since Bill loved driving so much.
Out On the Road, Just Me, Myself, and I
Bill started at Holland in 1992 as a linehaul driver, and has been doing it ever since. He’s always loved driving because it gives him some time to himself and allows him to be alone with his thoughts. He even makes himself “honey-do” lists in his head of things he needs to do around the house.
“When I’m out there driving, that time is just for me. It’s a peaceful feeling just being alone and listening to the radio or thinking to myself,” says Bill.
His favorite music to listen to is bluegrass and country, sometimes bluegrass gospel. Some great music paired with the beautiful scenery makes for an enjoyable drive for Bill. Being an open board runner, he drives different places each week, often at night. Believe it or not, the nighttime is Bill’s favorite time to drive because there’s hardly anyone on the road.
Because of his positive attitude and passion for driving, Bill earned the Three Million Mile Safety Award in March 2016, meaning he has driven more than three million consecutive miles in his truck without a preventable accident. Bill is just one of three drivers at the Columbus, Ohio terminal to reach this impressive milestone.
“You just have to pay attention to what’s going on around you. You almost have to drive everyone’s trucks and cars for them to anticipate what’s coming,” says Bill.
Best Grandpa Ever!
In addition to being a dedicated driver, Bill is also a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He couldn’t be more proud of his daughter and two sons, as well as his two grandsons. Luckily they all live pretty close, so they see each other often. They make it a point to go on outing together as much as they can – their most recent getaway was to the Smoky Mountains.
If anyone deserves a “best grandpa” award, it’s Bill. He and his son recently finished building a playhouse for his grandson, topped off with a slide! They also ride four wheelers together when the weather’s nice. There’s nothing quite as special as the relationship between a grandpa and his grandkids, and the time they spend together is truly cherished.
Holland would like to thank Bill for his outstanding performance as a driver and for keeping the roads safe. Keep up the great work, Bill!
