More about Lori...

Lori Goodman has all the ingredients needed for an all-star Terminal Manager…

The job of a Terminal Manager (TM) isn’t easy…but Lori Goodman doesn’t like things easy. For Lori, easy is just another word for dull.

Lori Goodman, Terminal Manager at Holland Trucking

“Some days I work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and others I’m getting started at 1 a.m. or 1 p.m.,” Lori said.

“It all depends on what needs to be done that day. But that’s my favorite part about the job — the challenge. I like to stay busy and be involved in different things. As a Terminal Manager, every day is different. And that’s the thrill of it.”

To be successful, terminal managers need the kind of energy and enthusiasm that Lori exemplifies. But those qualities on their own won’t get you through the average shift. You also need a whole lot of industry experience, knowledge, and interpersonal skills to thrive as a TM. Thankfully for us and the hardworking Team Holland members of Birmingham, AL, Lori has all those qualities in spades.

The Foundation for Success…
Lori first started in the trucking industry nearly 20 years ago as a part-time billing clerk for a Holland competitor. From there, she took the sort of winding route through the industry that makes for the best, most well-rounded TMs.

Over her two decades in trucking, Lori has worked as an Overages, Shortages & Damages (OS&D) Clerk; Inbound Supervisor; Operations Manager; and finally, as a Terminal Manager.

In doing so, she’s gained invaluable insight into a variety of aspects of the industry. And that diversity of experience has given her the know-how necessary to tackle the diverse challenges of life as a TM.

A Day in the Life…
Though the time that Lori starts her day may change, her workload doesn’t ever lessen. Just about every day is filled to the brim with a variety of tasks and challenges that require her unique expertise to navigate. And those tasks take her from the desk, to the dock, to dispatch, and back to the desk again multiple times in a single day…all to keep the terminal running optimally.

On top of her operational duties, Lori also serves as the final guard for all customer, employee, and interpersonal issues. While the operational tasks require decisiveness and industry expertise, these aspects of her day require a delicacy and emotional intelligence that few people possess. But Lori handles even the most tangled of “people problems” with efficacy and grace.

In many ways, her role as TM isn’t unlike her previous career as a nursing assistant. Although she worked in that role for only a short time, it too required a combination of technical acuity and emotional perceptiveness that is hard to find in just one person. By bringing both of those typically disparate talents together, Lori has set herself apart as a TM and all-around professional.

Lori Off the Clock…
Keeping true to form, Lori doesn’t like resting on her laurels even in her free time.

When off the clock, she prefers staying active and outdoors, with hobbies like kayaking, hiking, and traveling. But on the rare occasions when she does take a rest, her ideal would be to do so with her two adult children and two beloved pets (or “fur babies”, as Lori likes to call them).

Her son is 21 years old and is currently serving in the U.S. Army stationed at Watertown, NY. Her daughter is 17 and has just begun her senior year of high school. And her German Shepherd, Ava, and cat, Hillary, round out the list of her favorite “people” to relax with.

And we at Holland would like to thank Lori for leading the Birmingham terminal with equal parts enthusiasm and excellence for so many years. With her at the helm, we can sleep easy knowing that Birmingham will continue to make the Holland Difference, day in and day out.

We’d also like to suggest that Lori spend a weekend on the couch with Ava and Hillary every now and then. It might help her sleep easier!
